YEAR 5 · NSW STAGE 3
Mathematics
A little practice. A world of possibilities.
About Year 5 Maths and the teaching plan
The national Year 5 reference develops factors and multiples, larger calculations, decimal place value, related-denominator fractions, familiar percentages, inverse multiplication/division, metric measurement, perimeter/area, 12/24-hour time, measured angles, nets, transformations, grid coordinates, statistical investigations and chance experiments. Illustrative anchors: AC9M5N02, AC9M5N04, AC9M5N05, AC9M5A02, AC9M5M04, AC9M5SP01 and AC9M5ST02. Entry check: confirm multiplication/division fluency, fraction equivalence, decimal ordering, scale reading and systematic working. Programme destination: explain and connect primary concepts well enough to approach unfamiliar problems without being told which operation to use. Preview selected Year 6 foundations only after their prerequisites are secure; keep these previews distinct from optional secondary enrichment.
F = Foundation; D = Depth; E = Enrichment. These are this programme’s teaching labels, not official NSW outcome classifications. NSW stages span two years; an E label does not remove school-required content. Use explanations and transfer as well as test scores to judge readiness.
